Sixteenth century England saw revolutionary changes in the workings of royal court, separation from the greatest institution in medieval Europe, and the bloodshed of many due to a sole ruler. Henry VIII, the second monarch of the Tudor dynasty, was placed in power and ruled with such ascendancy and lack of mercy that his reign as king is still controversial to this day. Many assertions of his tyrannical ruling are made from interpretations of the last twenty years of his life. However, the crowning of the young king began as very promising to the youthful England that was beginning to be enticed by new Renaissance ideas. It was a time of high Renaissance in sixteenth century Europe as it saw unparalleled scientif ic experimentation, intellectual thought and debate. Henry can be seen as a victim of his times, since this time period was one that questioned traditional views of kingship. King Henry VIIââ¬â¢s coronation after his fatherââ¬â¢s death in 1509 was an occasion for celebration, partially because Henry VIIââ¬â¢s rule was seen by many as devoid, and the old king was viewed as cold hearted and tax hungry by his very own subjects. Henry VIII had characteristics that made up for his fatherââ¬â¢s deficiency and a perfect successor to the throne that England yearned to have taken by a proficient king. Henryââ¬â¢s well-rounded characteristics were exceptional and fitting for a king of England. Not only was he highly intellectual, mastering French, Spanish and Latin, but he also fancied musical endeavors and was a supreme athlete, particularly in hunting and jousting. One of his most predominant features was his handsomeness.
